In order to save you travel time, parking fees and be generally more efficient, we will use teledentistry in our practice for treatment plan consultations and for after office hours emergency assessments.

In our post-COVID-19 world, we may also be using this method for standard recall examinations associated with routine hygiene appointments.

Periodontitis is the inflammation and infection of the ligament and alveolar bone supporting your teeth. It can have a significant effect on your overall health. A number of systemic diseases and conditions can also raise your potential risk for periodontitis.

Periodontal Medicine is a term used to describe how periodontitis impacts your general health. Periodontitis has been linked to over 50 systemic diseases and conditions like cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, diabetes, pre-term low birth weight babies, preeclampsia, respiratory infections and others including osteoporosis, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, erectile dysfunction, Alzheimer's disease, gastrointestinal disease, prostatitis, and kidney disease.

Periodontal Medicine is important because periodontal disease is largely preventable and in many instances readily treatable. This provides many new opportunities for preventing and improving prognosis of several systemic pathologic conditions. It’s important to know which conditions in and around the mouth contribute to, and how they contribute to, the cumulative inflammatory burden on your body. Dentistry, for a number of reasons, is the ideal profession to identify and help manage many issues that contribute to inflammation and to systemic health.

We will assess your periodontal health and identify risk factors you may have. From this we will develop a specific home care routine for each person and a personalized schedule of maintenance to reduce and eliminate inflammation and thereby reduce your risk for systemic diseases and conditions. We refer to this a Personalized Periodontal Medicine.

Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are a third set of molars that grown in with your adult teeth. Sometimes there’s not enough room for these teeth to grow into, so they need to be removed before they can cause damage to your mouth or your other teeth.

Because the wisdom teeth are normally removed before they break through the gums, they need to be removed through surgery. The procedure is done under local anesthetic. We make an incision in the gums above each wisdom tooth, and then extract the tooth through the incision. After the teeth are removed we close the incisions with sutures.

Complicated extractions or patients who would prefer sedation are referred to the oral surgeon at the Oak Dental Centre.

TMJ Disorder, or “TMD” for short, is the name for a group of disorders that cause pain in the temporomandibular joint between your lower jaw and your skull. The exact cause of your TMD can be difficult to determine – causes can include arthritis, genetics, stress on the joint, or injury.

TMD symptoms can include chronic facial and jaw pain, headaches, difficulty opening your mouth and swallowing, and a clicking or popping sound when you chew. We diagnose the causes of TMD and provide a variety of treatments to bring relief.

TMD diagnosis and treatment

Diagnosis of TMD focuses on discovering the root cause of the pain. We’ll examine your overall health and stress level, your teeth and jaw structure, and whether you suffer from nighttime grinding or malocclusion (over or under-bite).

Once we determine the cause, there are a variety of treatments we can use to provide relief from the pain. We may recommend or prescribe anti-inflammatory medication, physiotherapy, massage therapy, orthodontic treatment, or stress reduction techniques. Once the system is restored to its normal function the TMD symptoms will usually subside.

Tooth Extractions

Impactions, severely decayed, a broken tooth, or periodontal disease (gum disease) can result in the need to remove a tooth. Extraction is necessary because the damaged tooth can put your other teeth, your gums, and your whole body at risk of infection.

We may also extract a tooth or teeth as part of orthodontal treatment, or when an emerging tooth puts other teeth at risk. This is often the case with your 3rd molars (wisdom teeth), which can become impacted when they begin to emerge.

While no dentist wants to extract a tooth, extractions are often necessary to preserve your dental health.

We perform extractions under local anesthetic, and once the tooth is extracted, we’ll take measures to preserve the remaining socket and keep the area healthy. We’ll also discuss replacement options such as an implant or a dental bridge to provide a replacement tooth.

Complicated extractions or patients who would prefer sedation are referred to the oral surgeon at the Oak Dental Centre.

Bridges are used to replace a missing tooth or multiple adjacent missing teeth. The basic idea of the bridge is that it’s one or more artificial replacement teeth that are held in place by being attached to your natural teeth.

The most common type of bridge uses an artificial tooth (also called a “pontic”) that is attached to two dental crowns that are placed over the teeth on either side of the missing tooth being replacement. Other types of bridges are used to replace teeth where there is only one supporting tooth, or when the bridge is supported by dental implants.

The replacement teeth are designed and coloured to blend with your natural smile. Bridges also prevent the remaining teeth from shifting position and “leaning in” to the gap left by the missing tooth.
